We Never Forget

This illustration is a clear reference to the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests. Drawing parallels with Liu Heung Shing’s photo of a couple hiding from a tank, this illustration modernises the symbol for state power: it replaces the heavy tank with a faster police vehicle; and crucially updates the image of the protestors to situate them clearly in 2019 Hong Kong by adding face masks and including a flowing current on water smoothly sweeping through the image, a alluding to one of the movement’s moto: Be Water.

In both cases the message is clear, despite the state’s money and power, the demonstrators’ flexibility, lightness and commitment end up fooling the state by sliding just beneath their feet.
