The first Lennon Wall directly linked to the Hong Kong movement was made during the 2014 Umbrella Movement outside the Central Government Complex. This form of collective artistic work of spontaneous free expression was first done in Prague, Czechia where a regular wall was decorated with love poems and short messages against the regime since the 1960s. In the 1980’s an unknown artist painted a single image of John Lennon, that was promptly followed by further expressions of freedom and political struggle.
On 11th November 2019, a young protester was shot by police with a real bullet at his chest in the same place shown in the photo.
